The Eco Turtle Project

Delphis Eco are proud to announce the Eco Turtle Project which aims to aid education surrounding sustainability in schools. The positives that spin off from The Eco Turtle Project also include a fundraising revenue for the school, business skills learnt by pupils and the chance for school’s to uphold their environmental aims.
The Eco Turtle Project’s primary aim is to embed more sustainability education into the curriculum. By understanding the tangible aspects of sustainability, pupils will be able to see how everyday actions can affect our planet. From learning about recycling measures to the water cycle, environmental issues and sustainable production Delphis Eco are hoping to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
From the initial designing of the logo and choosing the name of the Eco Turtle Project, a Year 4 class at Ashley C of E School have taken over the running of the inaugural Eco Turtle Project at their school. Pupils will sell three different products (Multi Purpose Cleaner, Anti-Bacterial Sanitiser and Washroom Cleaner) to their parents and all profits raised will be invested directly back into the school. The three products will be sold in concentrate form to reduce carbon footprint and parents are encouraged to reuse their trigger bottles time and again.
Ashley C of E School in Surrey is the first in the UK to pilot this exciting project. Headteacher Richard Dunne explains, “By offering Delphis Eco cleaning products to families of Ashley School, pupils will learn about the environmental benefits of recycling and sustainability. In addition, parents will have access to cost effective environmentally friendly cleaning products while the school generates a much needed revenue stream.”

CURRICULUM
CURRICULUM 5-11 YEARS OLD |
SUBJECT |
PUPILS SHOULD BE TAUGHT: |
KEY STAGE 1 |
Personal, Social and Health Education |
Active Role As Citizens What improves and harms their local, natural and built environments and about some of the ways people look after them. Knowledge of how the Eco Turtle Project can affect aspects of the everyday life and the world around them. |
Geography |
Knowledge and Understanding of Environmental Change and Sustainable Development Recognise changes in the environment Recognise how the environment may be improved and sustained Understand where petroleum comes from and the damaging effects it has on the environment – not only in obtaining it, but once it is converted into other forms as well. Recognising the benefits of plant-based surfactants – plants photosynthesise i.e. they convert CO2 in the presence of sunlight and water to O2 and energy for the plant. Plants also hold soil in place reducing erosion, have a vital part in the water cycle and create biodiversity. Knowledge and understanding of places Recognise how places have become the way they are and how they are changing Recognise the difference between towns, cities and the country and how many things we require in towns come from farms etc. Recognise the harmful effects of e.g. phosphates on the water courses – this creates algal blooms and decreases oxygen in the water and marine life. |
Science |
Life Processes and Living Things: Living Things in Their Environment Care for the environment The differences between things that are living and things that have never been alive Plant-based surfactants vs petroleum-based surfactants Living Things and the Environment Identify similarities and differences between local environment and ways in which these affect animals and plants that are found there Phosphates and bleach harm marine life. Delphis Eco’s cleaning products naturally biodegrade so that by the time they reach any marine life there is no danger. More plants = more oxygen = better quality air. |
Maths |
Number Operations and the Relationships Between Them Understand addition and subtraction Understand multiplication as repeated addition Calculating expenditure and earnings and profit. Volume e.g. how many 30ml doses can you get out of a 5L bottle? |
English |
Speaking and Listening Organise what they say To speak clearly, fluently and confidently to different people Pupils will have to market this project to the school and their parents. They will have to understand all aspects of sustainability and articulate the details of the project succinctly. |
KEY STAGE 2 |
Science |
Life Processes Life processes common to plants including growth, nutrition and reproduction Photosynthesis. Chlorophyll. The need for sunlight, water and air to create energy to grow. Plants produce oxygen. Green Plants Effect of light, air, water and temperature on plant growth. As per above. |
Maths |
Fractions, Percentages and Ratio Understand unit fractions Recognise equivalence between the decimal and fraction forms Solve simple problems involving ratio and direct proportion Understand that a concentrated solution, when mixed with water will change in composition. Pupils can work out the ratio of the new dilution and amend this to percentages, decimals or fractions. |
Geography |
Knowledge and understanding of environmental change and sustainable development Recognise how people can improve the environment [for example, by reclaiming derelict land] or damage it [for example, by polluting a river], and how decisions about places and environments affect the future quality of people's lives The understanding that by switching to ecological cleaning chemicals can have a huge impact on the environment (as per e.g.’s above). Reduce, reuse, recycle. Recognise how and why people may seek to manage environments sustainably, and to identify opportunities for their own involvement [for example, taking part in a local conservation project] The correlation between the running of the Eco turtle Project and the increased revenue stream for the school. Families will be using cleaning products that are kinder to their health. |
